Women Entrepreneurs: Obstacles Overcome

Women Kiran Mazumdar Shaw started her business with Rs. 10,000 of capital in her garage. Her applications for loans were turned down three times due to gender discrimination from banks in India. In 1978 she founded the company Biocon India and is the richest woman in India today.

Surprisingly enough, there are still only about 9% of women in India who participate in ownership of a firm according to the World Bank Enterprise Survey data. Like Kiran’s story, Doing Business would like to hear about the many women entrepreneurs who may not be in the spotlight, but who have faced and overcome such obstacles as Kiran did in establishing her businesses.

The Doing Business project is conducting a two-year research effort to identify legal and regulatory barriers facing businesswomen in 178 economies. The program will provide analysis on reforms that benefit women in business. As a part of this effort, the team will prepare profiles of women entrepreneurs describing reasons for their success, as well as highlighting some of the main legal, regulatory, and practical obstacles they faced in expanding their business. These case studies will help identify strategies to alleviate such obstacles, as well as communication approaches to promote the benefits of reform.

Doing Business welcomes nominations of woman entrepreneurs who have an experience that offers lessons that could inform reform efforts. Nominations can also be sent to doingbusiness@worldbank.org. We will select from amongst the nominations, contact them, and prepare profiles on each. These profiles will be published by Doing Business.

I am not clear, from the information given here, how people could submit nominations for women entrepreneurs for consideration by the Doing Business team. I followed the link from "nominations" which only led me to the main Doing Business page. I looked around there but could not find the instructions there. Did I miss it?

I would like to help you find women entrepreneurs by posting an announcement about this initiative at my blog (We Can Do, http://wecando.wordpress.com). But I don't want my readers coming here and then getting lost. Please advise. If your blog works like mine then you should have my email address.

Thanks,
Andrea Shettle, MSW

Dear Andrea - Thank you for your comment. We apologize about the nonprodcutive link. We should have it corrected by today. In the mean time, please feel free to direct nominations to doingbusiness@worldbank.org.

Cheers
Dahlia

Thanks for your help, Dahlia Khalifa. I've now posted the announcement at:

http://wecando.wordpress.com/2008/01/08/call-for-nominations-successful-disabled-women-entrepreneurs/

My blog is targeted at people with disabilities and at professionals who work with them, so my blog post was slanted accordingly.

I’ve been read thoroughly the article its been nice and very inspiring to everybody especially to the women that despite of the discrimination for the women and obstacles they had encountered they were now very successful in life that no matter how, one key in order for us to succeed you must fight for your right and stand for your own will if you think that is right. Discrimination is the key to become poorer the less fortunate ones,
Entrepreneur is one key to overcome poverty because you have to shots two birds at the same time one is to provide empowerment for those who are unemployed; second you have a chance to improve your life.
No fax Payday Loans is a loan that could help for you to those who may want to engage to the business (small type)
